I shall never forget the day in 1965 that the Lord Jesus spoke to me, calling me by name saying to me to make Him my choice. It was a Monday morning. I had been out with a friend the weekend before, drinking beer and watching the motorcycle races. As I sat in the kitchen (somewhat hungover) of my mother's and stepfather's home that day reading the Reader's Digest, drinking coffee and smoking a cigarette, suddenly I sensed the presence of the Lord Jesus in the room. I cannot tell you how I knew it was the Lord Jesus, I only knew!
I was reading an article about a woman named Jeane Dixon. She was somewhat famous for her predictions of the future and the article told of some of the things she had foretold, some of which, the article claimed, had happened. As I became aware of the presence of the Lord, He spoke to me and said, "what you are reading is somewhat the way it will be but she is not of me." He told me that the direction my life was going would lead me to death and that I had a choice to make. Then in tones of the most unutterable love, the Lord Jesus said to me, "make me your choice. I am the only reasonable choice you have."
What amazing love. Here I was a 23 year old sinner who had never prayed a meaningful prayer. Truly I felt unworthy of anyone's love, much less the love of God. Yet here was Jesus Christ, standing in the room with me (I did not see Him or hear an audible voice, but sensed where He stood) asking me to make Him my choice. Let me say without equivocation that I stood to my feet that day and turned in the direction that I sensed His presence and said, "Lord Jesus, if you will help me, I will serve you from this day to the day I die." Immediately, all of the profanity and vulgarity of my speech was gone. I no longer wanted to do the things that had been so much a part of my life up to that moment. I weep as I type these words into my computer. That was 46 plus years ago and I can truly say that "hitherto hath the LORD helped" me. (see 2nd Samuel 7:12)
I do not know how many time I have expressed to the Lord and to others over the years that I am not worthy of the least of His mercies and yet He has shown to me the greatest of them. (see Genesis 32:10) The Bible says in Romans 5:8 that, "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Not because we were good people or wanted His friendship but when we were His enemies, in word and action, Jesus Christ went to the cross for us. (see Romans 5:6-10)
I don't know who may read this but let me say to you that no matter what you may have done or what your life has been, no matter whether you were brought up in a godly home or a dysfunctional one, If you will commit the rest of your life to God, He will be your help in time of trouble. (see Psalm 46:1) If you have never experienced the amazing love of Jesus Christ in your life, turn to Him today. He will hear your cry and He will become your Saviour and closest friend. Don't delay, do it today!
